Abstract
Sixty-five anovulatory women with polycystic ovaries underwent laparoscopic laser vaporization.
Ovulation occured spontaneously postoperatively in 76.9%.
Regular menstrual cycles were estabilished in 72% with biphasic basal body temperature charts and luteal phase plasma progesterone . levels suggesting that these were ovulatoiy cycles.
In these group. mean serum LH & FSH levels showed a statistically significant increase the day after laser vaporization followed by a gradual decline in LH to a level significantly below the pretreatment value.
16 of 28 (57.14%) women resistant to standard CC therapy ovulated spontaneously after laparoscopic laser vaporization of the ovaries.
The remaining 12 patinents responded to CC postoperatively in a lower doasge than prior to surgery.
Postoperatively 56% conceived within 5 mon of laparoscopy.
These results suggest that by laparoscopic vaporization of subcapsular follicles, selected patients with PCOD can be induced to ovulate and subsequently conceive.
